The Döttling Gyrowinder is a one-of-a-kind work of engineering art. The high-precision instrument is the first to enable completely free rotation of the watch in every direction – including a complete rollover – which is the closest one can get to wearing the watch on the wrist. Just this sets the Gyrowinder watch winder distinctively apart from conventional watch winders, which merely turn a watch on a fixed axis either to the left or the right.

The other aspect that makes the Gyrowinder so unique is the abundance of possible adjustments. Since all watches have different weights, it is delivered with a set of counterweights – like those for an antique scale – that can be used to individually balance out each watch. The optimal position for the Gyrowinder is first adjusted using an integrated spirit level and three adjustable legs.

Visually, the Gyrowinder recalls the opulent tradition of nautical navigation instruments, with their gimbals and finest materials, created for perpetuity. The source of inspiration for the Gyrowinder, however, has little to do with seafaring romanticism. The idea came to Markus Döttling during a visit to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, specifically following a test for a training device for prospective astronauts, the function of which is now found in the Gyrowinder. In this sense, one could say that under its mouth-blown crystal glass bell jar, the Gyrowinder unites the best of both worlds.
